How to play Minesweeper
Open every square that doesn't hide a mine. Your first click is always safe. Each opened square shows how many of the eight squares around it hold mines; squares with none open their neighbours for you. Flag a square you're sure is a mine with a right-click, a long press, or Flag mode. Click a number that has all its mines flagged to open the rest of its neighbours at once. Open a mine and the game is over.
Levels
- Beginner: a 9 × 9 board with 10 mines.
- Intermediate: a 16 × 16 board with 40 mines.
- Expert: a 30 × 16 board with 99 mines.
Tips and strategy
- Look for numbers with only as many closed squares round them as their number. A 1 touching a single closed square means that square is a mine.
- Subtract the flags you have found. A 3 with two flagged mines beside it needs just one more, so if only one closed square is left, that square is a mine.
- Learn the patterns along a wall or a row of opened squares. In 1-2-1 the mines are beside the 1s; in 1-2-2-1 they are beside the 2s.
- Use chording to save time: click a number whose mines are all flagged to open all its other neighbours at once.
- Sometimes there is no safe move and you have to guess. Guess early rather than late, and pick the square the numbers make least likely to be a mine.
