How to play Reversi

Black moves first. On your turn, place a disc so that it traps one or more straight lines of your opponent's discs, across, down or diagonally, between it and another of your discs. Every trapped disc turns over to your colour. The dots show where you can play. If you can't trap anything, you pass. The game ends when neither player can move, and whoever has more discs wins. Corners can never be turned over, so they're worth fighting for.

Playing the computer

Against the computer you play Black, so you move first. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard from the New Game menu, or play a friend at the same screen. Your record against the computer is kept between visits.

Tips and strategy

  • Take the corners. A disc in a corner can never be flipped, and it lets you build edges that can't be flipped either.
  • Stay off the squares next to an empty corner, especially the one diagonally next to it. Playing there often hands the corner to your opponent.
  • Don't grab discs early on. Flipping fewer discs leaves your opponent fewer moves, and the player with more choices usually wins the end game.
  • Try to force your opponent into moves they don't want. If they have only bad moves left, they have to make one of them.
  • Count near the end. Fortunes swing hard in the last few moves, and the final count is all that matters.
